Botswana Residence Permits for the Diaspora
If you are relocating from North America or the UK, Botswana has a few clear permit paths, but the right one depends on your purpose, your documents, and your funding level. For most people, the process is manageable if you prepare early and avoid weak applications.
There are TWO APPLICATIONS you must apply for (together)
Immigration Permit - explains how you are supporting yourself
Residence Permit - grants legal permit to LIVE in Botswana

Immigration Application: Which Permit Fits
Work route: best when a Botswana employer is sponsoring you and applying on your behalf.
Investor route: best for business owners; investors may qualify for permanent residency earlier than other categories, and strong investment files tend to move faster.
Spouse or dependent route: for family-based relocation with supporting documents from the Botswana-based spouse or supporter.
Student Visa route: for students who were already accepted into accredited schools of higher learning in Botswana...this is not a long-term visa.
*Please note: Retirement Visas and other variables are not listed, as this Amanah Journey/Gahn Studios' article targets more long-term diaspora relocation support. As of 2026, the government is creating a special category for Retirement Visas. Stay tuned!
Residence Permit:
With these permits, you must ALSO apply for a Residence Permit. This is why Immigration has two application processes.
1) Residence Permit: for non-citizens staying beyond the visitor period; applications go through Immigration and can be endorsed in the passport... if approved.
-or-
2) Permanent Residence: generally for people who have lived lawfully in Botswana for at least 5–10 years, though investors may apply earlier.

What Botswana Asks For
For the immigrant category, the listed documents include Form 15, Form 3, a covering letter, passport copy, birth certificates, marriage certificate if applicable, photos, proof of support, and a bank statement.

For a standard residence permit, Botswana requires forms, a valid passport copy, photos, and proof of support or maintenance in the country. The government’s residence permit page says applications are submitted to Immigration offices and successful applicants receive a residence permit sticker in the passport.

Investor Route Reality
If you are moving as an investor, the file needs to be strong, clean, and well documented. In practice, smaller investments under USD 100,000 can take longer and attract more scrutiny, while bigger investments tend to move faster through BITC-backed channels.

As of 2026, permanent residence for investors can also be available before 5 years, which makes this route attractive for serious founders.
Medical and Timing
A medical exam can be done in your home country or in Botswana, and local doctors are often under USD 100. The government’s residence permit page says ordinary residence permit applications are meant to be completed in about 30 working days, while permanent residence is listed at 56 working days, with investor PR taking up to six months.
That said, the real timeline depends on how complete your documents are. Missing bank statements, unclear sponsor letters, or uncertified copies can slow the process more than the official service times suggest.
What to Pack First
For relocation prep, pack your passport, certified copies of all key documents, police clearances, medical records, school records if needed, bank statements, passport photos, and several digital backups.

Police clearances
Medical records
School records (if needed)

Bring proof of funds, because Immigration can ask how you will support yourself during your stay.
Also pack what is hardest to replace quickly:
Important documents checklist
Prescription medication
Updated CVs / resumes
Marriage certificates
Birth certificates
Diplomas
Scanned copies saved to cloud storage
USB backup folder
If you are arriving first on an Airbnb-style stay, keep one “arrival folder” separate so it is easy to show landlords, banks, or officials.

Where to Stay First
For most Diaspora arrivals, an Airbnb-style setup is the smartest first move because it gives you flexibility while you test neighborhoods and wait on documents.
Best first-step housing approach
Start with short-term accommodation in Gaborone.
Learn neighborhoods and pricing.
Confirm your permit path and budget.
Move into a longer-term lease once settled.
My Suggestion:
If you already have a stable permit and know the country well, you can expand beyond Gaborone and choose quieter residential areas or village settings.
Short-term lodging first, then a longer lease later, is usually the safest sequence.
